Male trail runner on a long trail.

Sport

Electrolytes for trail running. When supply points are far away.

On long trails, drinking volume, sodium loss and equipment are closely connected.

Why trail running has different demands

Trail running differs from road running through several factors that work together:

  • longer duration with changing intensity
  • elevation gain and uneven terrain
  • supply points further apart or unavailable
  • heat, wind and direct sun exposure
  • running vest, soft flask or hydration bladder as the primary drinking system

The hydration strategy therefore has to fit duration, route and supply situation.

Electrolytes and sodium on long trails

Sweat loss accumulates over hours. Water replaces fluid, but not sodium in a targeted way.

On long trails, in heat and at high intensity, sodium loss can become relevant - regardless of how much you drink.

Taste on long sessions

Flavoured products can become distracting over several hours. Soft flasks and hydration bladders can also retain flavours.

OsmoCore® Pure contains no flavours, sweeteners or colourants. The formula does not turn water into a flavoured drink.

Plan hydration and energy separately

Long trails often require energy - through trail snacks, gels or bars. OsmoCore® Pure does not replace that.

This allows fluid and energy to be planned separately.

Carbohydrate-electrolyte solutions enhance the absorption of water during physical exercise.

Setup for soft flask and hydration bladder

Typical use cases:

Soft flask - 1 stick in 400 ml, suitable for common sizes in running vests

Hydration bladder - neutral formula without flavours, sweeteners or colourants

Running vest - multiple bottles or soft flasks possible

Test what works before race day during training.

Questions about Trail Running

Are electrolytes useful for trail running?

For long trails, heat, elevation gain and heavy sweating, an electrolyte strategy can make sense. For short, easy sessions, water is often enough.

What is different about trail running compared with road running?

Duration, terrain, elevation, supply points and equipment interact more strongly. The hydration strategy has to be planned accordingly.

Can flavoured products become distracting on long trails?

Over several hours, the taste of flavoured drinks can become distracting. Soft flasks and hydration bladders can also retain flavours.

Can I use OsmoCore® Pure in a soft flask or hydration bladder?

Yes. One stick is designed for 400 ml water. The formula contains no flavours, sweeteners or colourants.

Does OsmoCore® Pure replace gels or bars for trail running?

No. OsmoCore® Pure is focused on hydration. Energy can be planned separately through trail snacks, gels or bars.
